In my poetry unit project I researched about the essential question of “How do poets reveal the theme of happiness in their poems?” and I read and analyzed four poems. Also I wrote three poems, one of them about the theme of happiness, to improve the poet inside me. According to my research, when the poets reveal the theme of happiness they tended to use similes and imagery to describe the happiness and tell about happiness.
Simile was the most used poetic device in the poems about happiness. When I was searching for poems that have the same poetic device, for my poetic device analysis, simile was the most popular one so I wrote about simile. Authors used simile to describe happiness and compare it to an object’s characteristics. For example, Janai Skilles wrote about happiness and sun and compared them with each other. She focused on the sun characteristics and said that it gets lost in cloudy days but it comes out after the cloudy days are finished. Then she said that happiness is like sun and it gets lost sometimes too but after bad days it will come and gave a lesson of waiting for happiness and not losing our hope. So, poets tend to use similes to reveal an idea about happiness in their poems.
Another thing I saw that revealed the theme of happiness was imagery. Poets used imagery to describe happiness. Raymond Carver used imagery in his poem and described the place that created the moment’s happiness. He said that light was coming from the sky and moon was hanging in the air. With this imagery he gave a feeling of happiness to the reader. Like Raymond Carver, many authors tend to use imagery to reveal the theme of happiness.
To conclude, according to my analysis, poets revealed the theme of happiness by using simile and imagery. Similes compared happiness to other things to reveal an idea about happiness while imagery described the place to give a feeling of happiness.
