In the poetry unit my group and I researched, how do poets reveal the theme of happiness in their poems. I analyzed two poems for poetic device analysis assignment, and one poem for style analysis assignment. I also wrote three poems, and somehow they relate to my group’s essential question.
I found out, how poets use the language and structure in their poems as I was writing my the style analysis. Jane Kenyon used her style in her poem “Happiness” in order to express that, happiness is a simple thing, and it can be received by people in any moment in any situation.
Then in the poetic device analysis assignment, I discovered, how do poets use metaphor in order to reveal the theme of happiness. For an example, Jack Hirschman compared happiness to, “surviving survivors,” and he revealed that, today’s people tend to suppress their happiness, even though it makes us contented of our lives. And Amy Lowell compared happiness to wine. Thus she revealed how happiness makes people feel good and relaxed. In the end of this assignment, I found out that, poets express the theme of happiness from different aspects, according their opinions and experiences.
Also writing my own poems, helped me to understand how poets reveal the theme of happiness. For an example, In my poem “The Road of Happiness” I used “the road” as a symbol of a process which leads to happiness, and I used metaphor by comparing happiness to other things, like a breakfast with family. Writing my own poems helped me to look from a poet’s perspective to poems.
As a conclusion, I found an answer to my group’s essential question. Poets use their style, language and structure, and poetic devices like metaphors in their poems in order to reveal the theme of happiness.
